In planning our weekend getaway to the Big Island, the boyfriend and I decided to stay in a bed and breakfast rather than a hotel. And there are LOTS of bed-and-breakfast places Kona side. Edge of the World was a gem out of the many I considered: reasonable prices for rooms, vegan-friendly breakfasts, friendly/helpful and quick communication with Kurt and Kana, favorable reviews on tripadvisor, suggestions about attractions and restaurants (even before we booked the room). Winner! The boyfriend and I stayed two nights in the Crow's Nest, which is on the second floor of the house with a private lanai and bathroom. The view from the lanai and the room windows was amazing! We arrived at night and did some gazing at the stars from the lanai. The king bed was a nice luxury too compared to our respective (smaller) beds at home. A goal one of these days is to have a bedroom large enough to comfortably fit a king-size bed. One day, maybe. About the drive to the B&B, Kurt and Kana provided detailed directions beforehand. We arrived at dark, so we were a little bit challenged navigating. My boyfriend was the one in the driver's seat while I was in charge of reading the directions and directing us. Our route was a little unclear to me in a few spots, so we called Kurt and Kana for further guidance. No problem. My boyfriend became familiar with the route to and from the B&B - he could probably do the drive in the dark or with his eyes closed! ;o) The breakfasts were amazing - visually, gustatorily. Easily customized - vegan-friendly if need be. Excellent coffee (so I hear, I'm not a coffee expert). Super local, delicious tropical fruit. Digging the avocado toast! My new favorite food! I knew my dad would envy the breakfast pictures! After we finished our breakfasts, Kurt would stop by the breakfast table and offer to answer any of questions about things to do that day. Kurt and Kana let us borrow snorkel gear, beach towels, coolers with ice packs, etc. for our little day trips. Very nice! Next time we're Kona side - we'll try to book the Pacific Room, which is cheaper than the Crow's Nest, has a semi-private lanai, and appears to have a hot tub. Otherwise I wouldn't mind staying in the Crow's Nest. Until next time!

This B&B place is totally at the edge...breathtaking view from our rented room. Kurt and Kana are excellent host and hostess! We were able to enjoy our stay at this place, plus laundry was taken care of. However, the drive to/from to this place is a bit tricky (need careful navigation)! Overall, fun stay and its all part of the adventure (even the drive to this place).

This is an amazing place !! This was my third stay at A Beautiful Edge of the World and I'm sure it won't be my last. The hosts are great -- friendly, informative, and helpful (they even do laundry for people who stay three days or more, free of charge !). The rooms are comfortable and spotless. There are a ton of interesting and fun things to do nearby and some great and very reasonable restaurants five or ten minutes away. On all of my stays there were interesting people staying there--folks from all over the world, and that made for great breakfast (absolutely delicious I might add) conversations together in the morning, and while having breakfast we can look out at the Pacific Ocean. Best of all, the price is really great compared to other places I've stayed. Oh, and one more thing, the coffee grown there at the plantation is the best I've ever had. I can strongly recommend this place to absolutely anyone.

First off, this driveway (more like obstacle course in a car) is tough and there are NO signs. You drive off of Hawaii Belt road down into a dense lush forest. After a surprisingly sharp turn to the left, you follow Kurt's (the innkeeper) only cogent direction from his now obsolete website (which he highly recommends): avoid going down the terrifyingly steep Coffee Drive. You feel grateful, not having to take your rental car on such an extreme, cliffhanging road. But don't breathe your sigh of relief yet : go forward, inching along a narrow, one-lane road thinking to yourself, "oh shit, what if someone is coming the other direction?" Little do you know that your terrifying descent, reminiscent of a beautiful tour down to the third circle of hell, is about to get worse. Except the descent to hell is probably safer. Brace yourself - this is as close to a rabbit hole as you'll get this life. Turn the dark corners, hope there's road down there to catch your car. You wonder who in the world is crazy enough to build houses on such a steep slope, not to mention the scenic, yet terrifying cliffs flirting dangerously with the right wheels of your car. You drive through a neighbor's property, whose dogs will "scare the bejesus out of you" (Kurt's words) so parking on the street and climbing out of the rabbit hole is not possible. You press on, descending, grateful for 4-wheel drive and the fact that at least your imminent death is in a beautiful location. We wonder how the local fire department would respond to an incident, no fire truck has a dream descending these roads. There are no signs the whole tortuous, practically off-roading way, because Kurt has some moral objection to signs, just like he does to credit cards and "what they do to people" (you guessed it - his words). Convenience, for other people at least, is not a valid reason to consider something, i suppose. And Forget your GPS, you techno-savvy, well-prepared person: none of these roads are on any positioning system. We will be home before dark every night. Thank you for the advance warning, Kurt. To be fair, the property boasts comfortable rooms including a bathroom large enough to bowl in, flat-screen TVs, and an incredible view of the ocean from a private balcony. The balcony also has two horrendously fat cats that are always nuzzling each other cutely, a two-person swing, and a fridge for each guest (though ours had an open, half-empty can of tonic water in it). There are DVD and CD players, and you can borrow a variety of bootlegs. He'll let you check your email, rent his golf clubs, rent his Kayak, buy his coffee beans ($11 per half pound). Personally, I think there is better, cheaper Kona available on the island. They'll do your laundry (once) too. Kurt also provides a binder with local area information, interwoven with his opinions, and his whole life story, including two marriages, two Daughters, one wedding, more degrees than you can shake a stick at, an orphanage in the developing world project, Vietnam, USAF, etc. This review seems incomplete if I don't mention that he lives with his wife, 5-year-old daughter, and sometimes mother-in-law underneath the first floor of the house. Kurt's wife, Kana, does a lot of work -- cooking breakfast, cleaning -- and you never see her idle. She is an integral part of this operation, yet her name is nowhere to be seen on the website or in most of the reviews. Breakfast is simply lovely: toast with avocado, a variety of fresh fruits grown on his farm, coffee of course, and conversations with other guests (mostly older couples -- the usual B&B crowd?). It's outdoors on a patio overlooking the sea. Wow. I think I deserve a Darwin award for driving here. There are a few red flags. Although all of the views talk about the wonderful hospitality, I felt more that the hosts were avoiding us, and it created an odd dynamic. I felt uncomfortable. It is unprofessional at best. When we arrived, he showed us to our room and around his property in a disrespectfully rushed way, interrupting my questions multiple times. It seemed like he was getting through it as fast as possible, not wanting to spend an extra second doing it. In one episode, I asked to quickly use the Internet to check email, as he offers on his website. Oddly, he suggested that I use the neighbor's wi-fi off of my laptop. While I am no expert in manners here, where I am from, stealing internet is bad manners. Also, he offers rental of his kayak, but when we asked about it, he told us just to rent one at the shore, even though they are more expensive. It seemed like he, again, simply did not want to spend the time. Strangely, he plays music loudly ALL day. It was even loud in our room, prohibiting taking naps. The music choices are also anything but background music; they would be disruptive if you were reading or watching TV. When we called, we let him know we were vegetarian, but when we arrived, it was a problem for him.

We stayed here while in Kona for 2 nights. It's a challenge finding the house but thank goodness for the very detailed instructions and yes, do try to get there before dark since the streets heading to the B&B are not lit and it will prove to be quite a challenge and in the narrow and windy road. Dr Kurt and his lovely wife, Kana are truly a warm and amazing couple. The house is a lil older but it's a spacious property with coffee plantations just right behind the house. Their adorable baby daughter Jenna is truly adorable.... We stayed in the Pacific Room, more space than we needed but had our own bathroom, TV and doors opening to the balcony and amazing ocean view! They also have all kinds of knick knacks and snorkling equipment and beach chairs in their garage which you can access to and take along to the beach. Half hour drive to downtown Kona.
